Starblanket unveiled in December

Last month, on Dec. 9, the René Deleurme Centre unveiled a Starblanket in a ceremony open to the community.

The Starblanket was designed by Noreen Spence and the main quilter was Jasmine McIvor.

Members from the centre’s newcomer, Indigenous, and non-Indigenous community participated each week on Mondays to help cut, iron, and sew each week.

RDC Staff members that were directly involved in organizing sessions include Allison Drummond (School & Family Community Connector), Tammy Bruce (Indigenous Community Liaison), Yana Zheleva (Settlement Program Assistant).

The René Deleurme Center Starblanket will be on display to honour residential school survivors and to commemorate the children who did not make it home from residential schools. Our Starblanket will help symbolize our ongoing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and the 94 calls to action.

Funds for this project came from the Province of Manitoba, Orange Shirt Day Fund.

After the unveiling the community enjoyed a feast together of beef stew, veggie stew, bannock, and cobbler.
